Connections

A 1,000-mile journey to free your mind, body and spirit. Hey, 7th through 10th graders, would you do it?

Before you answer, how about if you could ride the 1,000 miles on an air-conditioned luxury bus instead, while you meet other teens and experience new places and things?

And about this Web site – think you could do a better job of designing it, maybe with links to Facebook, MySpace or any of your other favorite spots on the Web, for instance?

Well, if you’re selected to participate in the CONNECTIONS Underground Railroad Project you and a few dozen other young people will get the chance to turn this site into something that really makes a statement... and to take that 1,000-mile bus ride.

There’s just one catch: you’ll have to spend some time with other teens learning a little about the history of the Underground Railroad movement, taking on the challenge of bringing out the dynamic leader lurking inside you, and discussing how people from different backgrounds can get to know each other and work together to make their community a better place.

How hard could that be?

About Connections

Tomorrow’s leaders. If you’re one of the 7th through 10th graders chosen for the Project, you’ll hit the road with over 60 other young people for our July 2010 Travel Camp. From Ohio to New York to Canada, you’ll retrace the once secret pathways traveled by those courageous freedom-seekers from southern plantations, and step into the shoes of the dedicated individuals who helped them.

You and the other teens in the Project will play a key role in rebuilding this Web site if you’re selected as a participant, with audio, video and links to some of your other favorite sites.

You don’t have to be a straight-A student or President of the Student Council to join the Project (but for all you straight- A students and Student Council leaders, don’t worry, we want you too). You DO need to be willing to:

(a) fill out our program application, with the help of your parent or guardian,
(b) attend one meeting each month from October 2009 through June 2010, and the 2-week Travel Camp in July 2010, and
(c) be SERIOUS about having FUN and making a real difference in your community.

Accepting applications NOW through SEPTEMBER 8, 2009
